A hammer or claw toe can often result from a bunion deformity. Surgery generally involves correcting both deformities.

Claw toe

Many patients attend The London Podiatry Centre complaining of claw toes. When the first of the two small joints in the toe is fixed the problem is called a hammer toe. When the smaller end joint of the toe is fixed in a "bent/flexed" position it is called a mallet toe. Generally, the only way to correct these toe deformities is by means of surgery.

Conservative treatment in the form of toe covers and special insoles can sometimes help symptoms but the deformity will persist.
