Big toe joint arthritis
This condition is often known as hallux limitus or rigidus. If non-surgical treatment fails then surgery can be considered. Non-surgical treatment options include special footwear, orthoses, rehabilitation regimes and injection therapy. In some instances, the joint can be saved utilising a variety of surgical techniques, some of which allow for rapid recovery and return to normal function.
In some instances the joint is far too damaged in which case a "joint destructive" procedure would need to be considered. The three options here are joint fusion, artificial joint implant and re-modelling of the joint using a procedure known as an inter-positional arthroplasty. Whilst all three procedures are undertaken at the Centre, inter-positional arthroplasty is often the most effective and desirable.
