Hallux Rigidus
Hallux rigidus can be defined as wear and tear of the great toe joint. The condition gives rise to pain and restricted motion of the great toe joint which can detrimentally affect the entire body leading to pain at other part of the foot and the ankle, knee hip and back.
Treatment depends on the severity of the deformity and in mild cases the condition can be treated non-invasively using specialised orthoses to decompress and protect the joint. Sometimes injections to protect the joint can be used. The centre recommends a range of specialised shoes which can often greatly help the condition.
Often, if the joint is too extensively damaged or if there are loose fragments of bone within the joint, surgery should be undertaken.
